La Costa MayaThe geographical area located on the south east coast of
the Yucatan Peninsular, between the southern border of the "Sian Ka'an"
Biosphere and the Belizean border is known as the "Costa Maya".. The towns
of Majahual and Xcalak are the primary tourist oriented areas..
This area is still considered 'virgin' as tourist development has just
really started.. Long strips of sandy beach areas are still available for
those perhaps interested in this hidden corner of the world..
Majahual is the beginning of the "Costa Maya" and is the location of a
cruise ship pier.
On Monday August 20,2007 the town of Majahual ( Mahahual) was hit by a catagory 5 Hurricane named Dean. The cruise ship pier was destoryed as were just about all wood/palapa type structures in the area. Many concrete dwellings had damages of some sort. Majahual with time will be restored. In the future plan a trip to visit the region that will come back better than ever!!... Thank you for your support and understanding.
To reach this remote part of Mexico, you must fly into Cancun and then rent a vehicle and drive south on Hwy#307 through Playa del Carmen, Tulum and the town of Felipe Carrillo Puerto.. Once you have gone through the pueblo of "Limones" be on the look out for the road signs, directing you to Majahual-Xcalak.. The turn off will be on the left side of the road.It is the only 'exit' and you will drive on this road until you come to the small seaside town of Majahual.. Here you will find a few restaurants, with seafood specialties.. Please note during 2007- 2008 Highway # 307 which runs allong the entire state from Cancun down to Chetumal is under major reconstruction and widening program and ALWAYS use caution when driving on this road. Please try and AVOID driving in Mexico after sunset.
If Xcalak is your final destination, you will see signs for this town on the road leading into Majahual.. Just follow the signs... Both these areas are very 'rustic' as electricity and phone lines are just now in 2005 reaching these remote areas. When a cruise ship in port town is busy. No ships, it is quiet laid back beachside town.
Enjoy the adventure of your lifetime down on the Costa Maya.. For more information on the Xcalak area, visit Xcalak Info Bacalar bed and breakfast Amigo's B&B awaits your visit! Come see us soon, FRIEND!
