Southern Q. Roo Mexico Mayan Ruins

For those of you traveling to the south of the state of Q. Roo, there are several "newly" discovered Mayan Ruins that are within an hours drive of Amigo's B&B Bacalar.. These are Dzibanche,Kinichna, and Kohunlich..

Dzibanche, is thought to have been the largest city in the south of Q. Roo, and was at it's "peak" during 300 to 1200 AD. The name, Dzibanche means "writing on wood" in Mayan.

The nearby ruins of Kinichna which means "House of the Sun" in Maya are thought to have been part of this large city.

Lastly the most impressive of the southern ruins, Kohunlich is home to large stucco masks, and is set a large palm forest..

To get to any of the southern ruins, take the Chetumal-Escarcega highway and follow the signs for the ruins.
